SLED vs. DFB: How to Tell These Twin Butterfly Devices Apart

Ever looked at two 14-pin butterfly modules side-by-side and realized they look completely identical?

You are not alone. Both SLEDs (Superluminescent Diodes) and DFB (Distributed Feedback) Lasers frequently share the exact same TEC-cooled package and FC/APC pigtails, making sourcing and selection errors incredibly common.

Here is how to tell them apart in under two minutes.

1. Core Physics: Broadband vs. Single-Frequency

  • SLED (Superluminescent Diode)
    • Mechanism: Uses an angled waveguide and AR coatings to eliminate cavity resonance. It outputs Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE).
    • Light Profile: Broadband, low temporal coherence (LED-like spectrum), with no sharp lasing threshold. It is not a laser diode.
  • DFB Laser Diode
    • Mechanism: Integrates a Bragg grating to force single-longitudinal-mode stimulated emission.
    • Light Profile: Highly coherent, single-frequency light with a narrow linewidth and a distinct current threshold.

2. Quick Identification Tips

I. Check the Label

  • SLED: Labeled SLED or SLD. Shows a central wavelength and bandwidth (e.g., 1550nm FWHM = 40nm). Specifies 3dB Bandwidth and Spectral Ripple.
  • DFB: Labeled DFB, Laser, or LD. Shows a single precise wavelength (e.g., 1550.12nm). Specifies Linewidth and SMSR.

II. Fiber & Drivers

  • Fiber: Both use SMF or PM fiber. However, SLEDs almost never use Multimode Fiber (MMF) as it ruins their spatial single-mode quality.
  • Drivers: DFB drivers require frequency tuning or wavelength locking; SLED drivers focus strictly on high-stability temperature (TEC) control to prevent spectral drift.
