Fiber Type:
- SI (Step Index) Optical Fiber -Light is introduced into the core of the SI fiber. Due to the difference in refractive indices between the core and the cladding, total internal reflection occurs at the core-cladding interface when the angle of incidence of the light exceeds the critical angle. This causes the light to be confined within the core and propagate along the length of the fiber with minimal loss.
- Graded Index (GI) Optical Fiber -When light enters the core of the GI fiber, it propagates along the fiber by continuously refracting due to the gradually changing refractive index. The light rays are bent towards the region of higher refractive index, which helps to keep the light within the core. This mechanism allows for a more uniform distribution of light propagation paths compared to step-index fibers, reducing modal dispersion and enabling higher bandwidth transmission.
